Painting Projects

Below is a selection of my PAINTING seminars and all are available to schedule for your art group. For each seminar, the student is required to bring the materials, unless otherwise indicated. For your convenience, I supply a materials list of for each project. In the case of the painting seminars, I supply the project pattern and the student will transfer the pattern onto the painting surface during class time. Complete step-by-step, full color instructions are provided for each student, as well as a full color reference photo.

Great Blue Heron
Available in Oil, Acrylic or WC
You will be studying the many different types of lighting found in nature, and the very dramatic and characteristics unique in each of these lights, using a complementary color arrangement.
The first in this series will be “Florida Heron,” as seen on the right. The portrait will be created in an allaprima style, and the following techniques will be offered: classic complementary color, dramatic light and the modeling of solid form.

White Orchid
The pristine beauty of the White Moth Orchid is captured in this beautiful acrylic painting. In this project I offer my unique approach to rendering the delicate illumination of soft light filtering through a window, as well as my technique for creating the illusion of three dimensional form. My easy-to-learn painting secrets, using my four-value method, will help you to create future projects on your own. This seminar is designed for the intermediate or professional student.
Waves of Color
Join Mark in this fun and informative seminar, where you will learn his impressionistic painting method. Various techniques on how to create the action of a crashing wave; the translucent appearance of the wave; rendering a wet reflective surface; and the dramatic lighting of a stormy sea.
This seminar is designed for the beginner, intermediate or advanced student.
Water Lily
In this seminar, Mark will instruct you on how to create a beautiful, delicate water lily floating on the surface of a pond. Using craft acrylics, you will be introduced to the techniques of creating the illusion of reflections in water; the iridescent shimmer of the water droplets. In addition to his unique painting method, the students will receive a personal explanation of Mark’s view of color theory.This seminar is designed for the beginner, intermediate or professional.
Secret Santa
Join Mark in this fun and festive seminar featuring our beloved holiday elf, Santa Claus. Dramatic lighting, review of portrait techniques including, skin tones, hair, clothing and different textures will be demonstrated.

Spanish Stallion

Lake Chatuge
Contrasting expressive knife strokes of the trees against the smooth, soft distant backdrop, this painting offers you a variety of new techniques to add to your skills as an oil painter. We will begin with traditional brush application, learning to create the illusion of depth and atmosphere with aerial perspective. After completing the distant mountains and tree-lined shore, we then take up the painting knife to add the rich texture and colorful fall vitality of the foreground trees.
Old Country Roses
It’s time for High Tea! Join Mark in this fun and informative seminar, where you will learn his impressionistic painting method. Various techniques on how to create the translucent appearance of fine bone china; rendering a pattern on a form; how to render a metallic reflective surface; folds in drapery; and how to render realistic woodgrain.

Golden Iris
This delightful oil painting project offers my unique approach to rendering the brilliant, vibrant color and dramatic lighting. Underpainting techniques, contrasting values, complimentary hues, and reflected light will be offered in an easy to understand manner. A pattern and color reference photo will be provided, as well as STEP-BY-STEP COLOR INSTRUCTIONS.

Giraffe Love WC
Join Mark as you create your very own watercolor illustration of this delightfully whimsical portrait of motherly love. In this project, designed for anyone with little or no watercolor experience, Mark will offer his distinctive approach to watercolor, designed to boost your skills in watercolor painting.
Informative techniques will be presented in any easy to understand fashion: dramatic use of form, complimentary color and contrast;fine detailing; and how to create the various textures..

This dramatic oil painting project will offer the beginning, intermediate or professional student my unique approach to rendering the brilliant, reflective sheen of fruit. Underpainting techniques, contrasting values, complimentary hues, and reflected light will be offered in an easy to understand manner.
Good Morning
Also available as a color pencil seminar. This seminar will awaken your mastering of the use of color. In this project, you will sharpen your skills in creating animal portraits, rendering feather texture, and creating a spectacular dawn sky. I will offer my easy-to-learn minimalist painting approach, and an insight into my color theory.
Fall Reflections copy
This is a great project for the beginner or intermediate artist. Learn to create an underpainting, and then, apply layer after layer of vibrant color for a beautiful result.
Target Color Mixing Seminar
Every art student, in order to create successful paintings, must master the art of mixing color. In order to mix color, one must have a total understanding of color. An art student must not only the know the definition of the terms: primary, secondary, tertiary, complimentary, value, chroma, temperature, intensity, pigments, mediums, tint, tone, shade, harmony, and arrangement; but have a hands-on mastery of how to mix the exact color, every time. Swan Lake Acrylic
Bathed in warm afternoon light, floating upon the gentle blue ripples of the reflective water, few images can invoke such a sense of peace and tranquility than the beautiful white swan. In this Acrylic Painting Project, students will learn about reflection and the many "colors" in a white swan.
Beginner Apple
This beautiful apple is a perfect project for the first time painter, and can be done in either acrylic or oil. Students will learn Mark's 4-color Quadratone process, light and shadow, and achieving realism. It's painted on a 6x6 canvas.
Mountain Meadow
Nothing is more refreshing than a morning stroll along a mountain meadow slope, enjoying the cheerful, vibrant blossoms covered in dew, with each bud providing the promise of renewal. Using rich, vibrant pigments, I will provide easy-to-follow, practical instruction, demonstrating how to capture the magnificent mountains in the late spring.
